Topanga, CA
Role: Brand Strategist
Topanga is an iconic Southern California enclave positioned between major regional tourist hubs. At Emergent Labs, I developed a foundational brand positioning strategy to define how Topanga should differentiate itself in the SoCal travel landscape. Rather than producing tactical execution like campaign taglines, activation concepts, or social content pillars, this project focused strictly on upstream strategic positioning to guide future brand decisions.
Topanga is surrounded by world-famous neighboring cities that command the majority of regional tourism dollars. The core issue facing Topanga wasn't a lack of awareness—it was a lack of intentional consideration. Visitors passed through or happened to stumble upon it, but rarely designated it as their primary destination. The goal was to shift Topanga from a place people accidentally discover into a destination they intentionally choose.
Through cultural research, I mapped two defining consumer tensions currently shaping modern travel behavior:
1. Speed Fatigue & Checklist Tourism: Travelers are increasingly overwhelmed by the relentless speed and digital optimization of daily life, driving a desire for presence and analog living. Despite this shift toward "slow travel," most tourism boards still market destinations like a high-stress task list, promoting more attractions, more activities, and packed itineraries.
2. The Hidden Gem Paradox: Social platforms and search algorithms have fundamentally changed travel discovery. Gen Z and millennial travelers actively crave authentic, off-the-beaten-path experiences. However, because discovery is driven by algorithm engagement, the moment a "hidden gem" goes viral online, it becomes overcrowded, lost to overtourism, and stripped of its original appeal.
Territory 1: "Exhausted by Speed":
Strategic Tension: Travelers seek an escape from everyday speed, yet turn their vacations into another high-pressure checklist.
The Opportunity: Topanga offers an immediate alternative - it has no commercial downtown, no manufactured attractions, and no checklist. It was built around living rather than visiting.
The Brand Promise: A vacation that doesn't feel like work.
Emotional Payoff: Feeling genuinely relaxed and restored rather than exhausted.
Territory 2: "The Algorithm Has Changed Travel"
Strategic Tension: Everyone wants to find a unique, uncorrupted destination, but algorithms force travelers to follow the exact same digital map.
The Opportunity: Topanga offers something the algorithm cannot replicate: the feeling of authentic self-discovery. Its history is rooted in artists, musicians, and unconventional living, existing as a real community rather than a curated feed.
The Brand Promise: A place that feels like you found it.
Emotional Payoff: The thrill of discovering an unmanufactured, original experience.
This presentation established the upstream roadmap for Topanga's destination strategy. By framing the core challenge around consideration rather than awareness, the work gave decision-makers a clear lens to evaluate future creative campaigns, community partnerships, and tourism initiatives.
